Why Marbles My 1st blog attempt Was an answer to a promise I made to my eldest son when I handed him a jar full of marbles. The marbles were from a collection saved by my mother over the years of my childhood, and I must admit that if left to me I would have already lost all of my marbles. My son asked if I could jot down some of the ways these marbles were used I told him I would write down as much as I could remember and send it to him later. I am the supreme procrastinator of all time which resulted in him sending me a reminder at which time he promised not to lose my marbles and I reassured him that I would get busy and tell him and his children how the beautiful round bits of glass and minerals were used for amusement and competition. My Response2 blog arose out of frustration with the attitudes and lack of respect for our country, our traditional ethics, and educational system. Rons Lyrics and Poetry started just because my scribbles needed a place to rest.

Mothers Day 2015

My mom has been in Heaven for a few years now and for some reason my thoughts turn to her on every Mothers day. It seems that I, for the most part, gave her very little attention. For that shame on me. Please take the time to reach out to your moms often, at some point in your life all you will have is the memory.
This is a poem I wrote a few years back.
Mom, today I pray that you can hear me say
How much I appreciate the things you did
How much I regret not realizing the life you led
And I want to apologize for not telling you
The things I should have said.
To me you are a Hero and I love you.
I think I should have let her know this more often.

Palm Sunday reflection "THE BURDEN"

THE BURDEN

©Ron Burres, 2018

(thoughts of Palm Sunday)

I walked steadily along the way

My small hooves cushioned

Easing the weight upon my back

Humans crowding close to me

Shouting and yelling praises

As they covered my path that day

I noticed the trees all barren now

Their fronds strewn along my way

Once crowned and so adorned

Now stripped and standing naked

Foretelling what was preordained

That of Mankind being reborn again

Somehow I knew my reason for being

Was to bear this weight upon my back

An act destined before time began

That I should carry this sacrificial lamb

To give up His life and then to live again

The weight on my back seemed to lighten now

I realized how light my load compared to His

He would carry a cross covered in man’s sin

His precious blood spent in purchase of forgiveness

A heavy, heavy burden.

TO ALL WHO BEAR MY DNA

Today I decided to start my new endeavor, adding it to the all-ready stack of things to do before my clock stops ticking. I never seem to know what will act as a catalyst and today it was another poem ticking away in my attic.  When I first started writing, way back when just about all of my inspirations came from my own pain or the pain I envisioned others were having.

From the bandstand I was able to see a myriad of life and lives in all stages of growth and decay.  One such observation brought about one of my songs, a touch of empathy I would suspect, mixed with the observation and fear of stepping on the wrong path.

That fool is Me, (http://ronsmarbles.blogspot.com/2018/03/that-fool-is-me.html  )

The spark today seemed to have hit much closer to home, causing me to do a priority check on my to-do list.  All of a sudden the items “get my children to forgive me” and “help anyone who cares, to know me” jumped up on the list by substantial numbers.

WHO ARE YOU © Ron Burres    3/18/2018

I stood there looking at him, quizzically

As if I had just recognized him from the past.

He seemed so different than when I had seen him last.

His eyes had changed, they weren’t the same

It was like looking into a fire that had no flame.

He was much older than I remember

Such a change from spring to December

It always surprises me how we neglect to see

All those many things we don’t want to be

I guess it just so much easier if we just look

Today as I looked into his eyes

Into the depths of his heart and soul

I saw the pain of not knowing what best to do

The sorrow of lost chance smothered by time

Unable to show how much he loves you.

KARLIN TURNS SIX © Ron Burres

YOUR DADDY SAW YOU THE DAY YOU WERE BORN
IT WAS ON AN ICY NEW YEARS MORN
THE NEXT YEAR YOU TURNED ONE
YOU WERE JUST STARTING TO BE SOME FUN
THEN YOU JUMPED TO THE AGE OF TWO
YOUR DADDY WAS HOOKED HE LOVED YOU TRUE
WHEN YOU TURNED THREE IT WAS PLAIN TO SEE
YOU WERE TRULY THE APPLE IN YOUR DADDYS TREE
THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU WERE FOUR
AND YOUR DADDY JUST LOVED YOU MORE AND MORE
THE YEAR THAT YOU TURNED FIVE
YOU MADE YOUR DADDY GLAD TO BE ALIVE
AND NOW YOU’RE TURNING TO THE AGE OF SIX
AND IT PUTS YOUR DADDY IN A TERRIBLE FIX
CAUSE HE CAN’T FIND A WORD THAT WILL RHYME
WITH JUST HOW MUCH HE REALLY LOVES YOU THIS TIME
SO I’LL JUST HAVE TO SAY

I LOVE YOU AND WISH YOU A HAPPY SIX.

COLOR ME HUMAN (C) Ron Burres

I SEE A LOT OF THEM IN THE NEWS
AND ON THE TV
THEY JUST DON’T SEEM TO SEE THINGS
THE SAME AS ME
THEY SEE HATRED AND ANGER WHERE EVER THEY LOOK
WHEN I LOOK OUT AT THE WORLD
THIS IS WHAT I SEE

I SEE CHILDREN SINGING WITH JOY IN THEIR VOICE
I SEE PARENTS LOVING GIVING LIFE AS THEIR CHOICE
I SEE BLINDNESS OF COLOR IN THE MAKING OF MAN
I SEE SAMENESS IN ALL, JUST THE ONE RACE

HUMAN

IT'S NO SUPRISE

IT’S NO SUPRISE
HIS EYES LOOKED SO SAD AND FULL OF PAIN
IT WAS AS IF HE COULD NEVER LOVE AGAIN
HE SAID EACH TIME THE PAIN IS SO DIFFERENT
BUT SOMEHOW IT ALWAYS HURTS JUST THE SAME.

WELL THERE AIN’T NO SUPRISES, IVE SEEN IT ALL
FROM THE SHORT AND THE FAT, TO THE SKINNY AND TALL
WE ALL LIKE TO DANCE AND HAVE A GOOD TIME
BUT WHEN IT COMES TO LEAVIN
IT’S ALWAYS THE SAME,
 IT’S NEVER ME

IT’S SOMEONE ELSE WHO’S ALWAYS TO BLAME

DRIFTING IN MY MIND

DRIFTING IN MY MIND    (C) Ron Burres  2014

YOU TURN GENTLY IN YOUR SLEEP
YOUR BREATH SPEAKING SOFTLY TO MY HEART
AS IT BEGINS TO POUND WITH IN MY CHEST

I LAY THERE LISTENING TO THOUGHTS
THAT GO DRIFTING THROUGH MY MIND
DISCOVERING A ME I THOUGHT WAS LOST
WAY BACK  IN ANOTHER LIFETIME

THE AMERICAN SOLDIER

THE AMERICAN SOLDIER    (C) Ron Burres 2004

(Song spoken  MUSIC: Battle hymn of the republic in background)

I AM THE HEART AND SOUL OF OUR COUNTRIES FIGHTING MAN
WHO DIED FIGHTING ON FOREIGN SOIL PROTECTING THOSE IN ANOTHER LAND
THEIR FREEDOM WAS MY GOAL, YES FREEDOM WAS MY GOAL

I PROUDLY CARRIED THE STARS AND STRIPES, THROUGH BATTLES IN FREEZING COLD
I'VE FOUGHT IN DESERTS, ON LAND AND SEA, WITH A HEART BOTH BRAVE AND BOLD
IV’E DIED ALONE ON FOREIGN SOIL WITH MY FAMILY CRYING THERE AT HOME.

I AM THE SPIRIT OF THOUSANDS OF SOULS, THOSE WHO DIED BEFORE THEIR TIME
THEY GAVE THEIR ALL FOR FELLOW MAN, THEY NOW REST IN SOME FOREIGN LAND
THEY FOUGHT FOR FREEDOM, YES FREEDOM WAS THEIR GOAL

THEY FOUGHT BESIDE ONE ANOTHER OTHER, REGARDLESS OF COLOR OR CREED
WITH FAMILIES LEFT AT HOME TO MOURN, THEY CAME TO PROTECT A HUMAN NEED
WHERE ARE THOSE OTHER COUNTRIES NOW,  WHERE ARE THEY WHEN WE BLEED,

STAND UP AND BE COUNTED, STAND UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT
STAND UP FOR THOSE OPPRESSED FOR THOSE WHO CAN NOT FIGHT
STAND WITH HEADS HELD HIGH STAND AND MAKE US PROUD AGAIN
WE FOUGHT FOR WHAT WAS RIGHT  OUR DEATHS WERE NOT IN VAIN

GOD BLESS THE U.S.A.

CHANGE

I am not that man you knew yesterday,
Each day is added onto the ones before
If it were not for that man of yesterday
Touching my life in his own unique way
I would not be who I am
Perhaps,
Tomorrow I will be better.

IMAGINARY WORLD...a song written for Karlin and Austin

STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE IS ON YOUR BEDSPREAD
CHARLIE BROUWN IS HANGIN’ ON YOUR WALL
BUTTER BEAR IS SLEEPIN’ IN THE CORNER
THE RAGGEDY TWINS ARE LAYIN’ IN THE HALL
http://www.ronslyrics.com/tp.gif
AND I’M DRIVIN’ DOWN THIS ROAD THINKING ABOUT YOU
AND ALL THE FUN THAT WE’VE SHARED
GOIN TO SHOWS AT THE THEATER
THE ZOO AND PLAYIN’ IN THE SAND

IN YOUR IMAGINARY WORLD, DOES YOUR DADDY PLAY A PART
HE REALLY LOVES YOU BABY
AND HE NEEDS A PLACE TO NESTLE IN YOUR HEART.
SOME DAY WE’LL GO TO HAWAII, OR MAYBE EVEN VISIT DISNEYLAND
WE WON’T NO IF THAT’S REAL THOUGH, TILL WE’VE GOT THE TICKETS IN OUR HAND

AND MINNIE AND MICKIE ARE WATCHIN HOLLY HOBBY TALKIN TO YOUR SMURFF
AND THE THREE LITTLE PIGS ARE PLAYIN A GAME OF OL’MAID WITH THE WOLF

IN YOUR IMAGINARY WORLD, DOES YOUR DADDY PLAY A PART
HE REALLY LOVES YOU BABY, AND HE NEEDS A PLACE TO NESTLE IN YOUR HEART
HE REALLY LOVES YOU BABY, AND HE NEEDS A PLACE TO NESTLE IN YOUR HEART.

CHECKING IN TODAY..a poem written by ??

A Minister passing through his church In the middle of the day,
Decided to pause by the altar
To see who came to pray.
Just then the back door opened,
And a man came down the aisle,
The minister frowned as he saw the man
Hadn't shaved in a while.

His shirt was torn and shabby,
And his coat was worn and frayed,
The man knelt down and bowed his head,
Then rose and walked away.
In the days that followed at precisely noon,
The preacher saw this chap,
Each time he knelt just for a moment,
A lunch pail in his lap.

Well, the minister's suspicions grew,
With robbery a main fear,
He decided to stop and ask the man,
'What are you doing here?'

The old man said he was a factory worker
And lunch was half an hour
Lunchtime was his prayer time,
For finding strength and power.

I stay only a moment
Because the factory's far away;
As I kneel here talking to the Lord,
This is kinda what I say:

'I Just Came By To Tell You, Lord,
How Happy I Have Been,
Since We Found Each Other’s Friendship
And You Took Away My Sin.
Don't Know Much Of How To Pray,
But I Think About You Every day.
So, Jesus, This Is Ben,
Just Checking In Today.'

The minister feeling foolish,
Told Ben that it was fine.
He told the man that he was welcome
To pray there anytime.

'It's time to go, and thanks,' Ben said
As he hurried to the door.

Then the minister knelt there at the altar,
Which he'd never done before.

His cold heart melted, warmed with love,
As he met with Jesus there.
As the tears flowed down his cheeks,
He repeated old Ben's prayer:

'I Just Came By To Tell You, Lord,
How Happy I've Been,
Since We Found Each Other’s Friendship
And You Took Away My Sin.
I Don't Know Much Of How To Pray,
But I Think About You Every day.
So, Jesus, This Is Me,
Just Checking In Today.'

Past noon one day, the minister noticed
That old Ben hadn't come.
As more days passed and still no Ben,
He began to worry some.

At the factory, he asked about him,
Learning he was ill.
The hospital staff was worried,
But he'd given them a thrill.

The week that Ben was with them,
Brought changes in the ward.
His smiles and joy contagious.
Changed people were his reward.

The head nurse couldn't understand
Why Ben could be so glad,
When no flowers, calls or cards came,
Not a visitor he had.

The minister stayed by his bed,
He voiced the nurse's concern:
No friends had come to show they cared.
He had nowhere to turn.

Looking surprised, old Ben spoke up
And with a winsome smile;
'The nurse is wrong, she couldn't know,
He's been here all the while.'

Every day at noon He comes here,
A dear friend of mine, you see,
He sits right down and takes my hand,
Leans over and says to me:

'I Just Came By To Tell You, Ben,
How Happy I Have Been,
Since We Found This Friendship,
And I Took Away Your Sin.
I Think About You Always
And I Love To Hear You Pray,
And So Ben, This Is Jesus,
Just Checking In Today.'

If this blesses you, pass it on. Many people
will walk in and out of your life, but only
true friends will leave footprints in your
heart...

May God hold you in the palm of His hand
And Angels watch over you..
Please pass this on to your friends
& loved ones. If you aren't ashamed.

Jesus said, ' If you are ashamed of me,'
I will be ashamed Of you before my Father.'
If you are not ashamed, pass this on.

So, FRIENDS & FAMILY, this is ME ...

EDNA'S PRAYER FOR ED

EDNAS PRAYER FOR ED  (At Ed's Bed)

You might remember a story that once went around
Bout a gatherin’ of church folks in my old home town
There was quite a ruckus caused by a prayer that was said
By a new member of the flock, a man named Ed

Now I saw Ed once again a few years back, as a favor
and I thought to ask him if he remembered that prayer
It hadn’t been forgotten like prayers one usually hears
It had stayed there in my memory throughout the years

Ol’ Eds’ looks hadn’t changed a lot since then
Course his hair was whiter and his back was bent
You could see he was in there behind all the wrinkles
by the slight smile and the way his eyes would twinkle
He’s the same guy who passed the hat and winked at me
But somethin’ was diff’rent and that was plain to see
You could see there was somethin’ else inside his mind
Something had changed inside him with the passin’ of time
It was like he was watchin’ something that was hard to see
And when he fin’lly caught the time and place, he looked at me
He said son
a lot of waters passed under the bridge since then
sometimes things just change and you don’t know when
I was younger and still pretty mad ‘bout all the things I’d lost
It seemed to me that all that God stuff had just too much cost.
Cause with all that had happened I just wasn’t sure
That goin’ to church and prayin’ would hold any cure
that stupid ol’ prayer was just one way of shakin’ my fist
to shout at a God I was sure didn’t even exist
My wife she was purty quiet on the way home that day
After the way I had acted there wasn’t much she could say
My prayer really wasn’t one, and that was real plain to see
She was so embarrassed I wasn’t sure she’d ever forgive me.
That night when she knelt down to pray
I was quite surprised at what she had to say
I was sure she wanted God to make me pay
For the unthankful things that I said that day
She told God that I just couldn’t understand
Why He didn’t give in to our simple demands
And why He gave man the freedom of choice
To follow, or not, direction of the Spirits small voice
I heard her ask God to give me some proof
And to show His loves personal and not so aloof.
Let him know this Lord for You sent us your Son
To wash clean mans sins since his time was begun

I waited for Ed as he paused, for a minute or two
Recalling Gods small whisper about what to do
He said He told me
To give thanks for all things whether big or small
And to read about Job from whom Satan took all.
Bad things can happen Ed, but it’s not all just a test
Practice Faith, Hope, and Charity to clean up a mess.

The next morning Ed remembered his wife’s prayer for proof
As church members kept commin’, some patched up his roof
He watched in amazement as those neighbors built him a shed
It was like they all had forgotten the kinda prayer that he’d said
They all worked together, built a new barn and filled it with hay
Ed said he learned a lot about forgiveness in just that one day
And that to love your neighbor is more than just Gods plea
It’s a way of healin’ the pain that hides in you and in me.
He said to remember Hope’s a thing that let’s man keep on goin
And faith is belief in the good things without them really showin’
The wealth in our worlds are just work and things to tend
The real wealth and riches are God, our family and friends

Now I watched as Ed lay there restin’on that hospital bed
I wondered what thoughts were goin’ on there in his head
I could tell he had faith and could hear what God had to say
‘Cause Ol’ Ed he smiled, he winked, and then quietly he slipped away

Now I’m sure when ol Ed got to Heaven they all had a good laugh
About how Eds prayer had cleared up his path
And his wife’s prayer for The Spirit to give Ed the proof
And how The Spirit used Ed’s neighbors, to show him the truth.

I’m sure I’ll see ol’ Ed again
He’ll wink, and smile and say
Welcome friend

HOW FAR WE HAVE COME,
IN SO SHORT A TIME.
AWAY FROM THE REPUBLICI ONCE CALLED MINE.
AWAY FROM THE VALUES WE ONCE HELD DEAR,
MOVING TOWARD A PLACE
COMMON SENSE SHOULD FEAR.
